Is it worth it?

I think I am about done.
Windows 7 has finally beat me down.
I am very seriously thinking of closing down my web site.
If I shut down this site, then I don’t have to deal with different systems not getting along. A bunch of problems go away.
I just cant get Linux and Windows to get along. I am tired of feeling stressed and I am tired of spending time on this. I would much rather be out taking photos or watching a movie or something.
Whats the down side?
I would lose a few people that currently look at my site for different things, but in the end, is that a big deal? The internet is a big place, they will find what they come to my site for somewhere else.
I would lose my photos on my site. I would have to find somewhere else to put them. I really dont like Flickr, but thats the logical choice.
I would lose the ability for people to comment on my photos. That would be pretty sad. (You have to have a flickr account to comment, I hate yahoo almost as much as facebook so I cant ask anyone to sign up just for me).
I would lose this blog.
I would lose the weather.
They are the main ones. There is one other thing, I would lose the humming bird and all sky cam. Its down at the moment, but I got a real kick out of having a camera like that. Again, is it worth it?  Duno.

One thing I do know, it should not be this hard… Its like I am being forced to make a choice. Give up photography and tinker with the computers, or give up the web stuff. I cant do both.

you know im not all computer brained—cant you just have one computer tucked away somewhere to run this stuff-blog photos etc and then have another computer to do whatever?? like you have the rangie and the goldwing – they both take you places but are different

Sue, you just described the exact set up I have and the exact problem I have.
I have a web computer tucked at the back of my desk, it just runs the web site, blog, photos and cameras.
The problem is that I can not connect to it from my windows computer and so thus can not upload my weather, edit my web site pages or share photos etc with that computer.
Its a major pain the butt and has been that way for almost 6 months now. I have spent hours and hours on it trying to get the two computers to play nice and really am about ready to give up on the whole thing. I just cant think of a way to break it up such that I can still do some of what I want.

This is a bit of a shot in the dark (in other words I have no solid facts to back it up) but could you bring in a CPIO – another computer that knows both languages. Rent a small spot on the web somewhere, use the windows machine to write to that, then pull it into Linux off the web?

A bit messy, but you are always talking about “work arounds”.

Personally I think it would be a pity for you to drop the web site, but I do understand the frustration.

Send me an email and tell me what your Windows 7 problems are, I can probably help you out with it. What version of Windows 7 are you running, and how are you trying to share the two operating systems.

    Ben,

I am just setting up a NEW ACER NETBOOK (D260) as a stand alone (LOW power consumption) PC for Weather Display and my new Selectronic SP PRO Inverter software. Yes I have just installed a 1.85kwatt Solar Array etc… All going OK then I read your thoughts on ‘Calling it a PC day” with regard to your web site. Hmm I hope you are feelingbetter about it soon, however it is your call and I can only say do what is best for YOU. No good having a great web site if you ar “going under” trying to find the time to look after all your activities.

Should you decide to “pull the plug” on yor web site please try and give me some notice as I may look into setting up my own, albeit a members site without Google search etc..

    Regards, Tom

    @beno.id.au

Have you installed Samba? There is also FTP, which you can do from the command line in Windows 7. The other option is to simply run your website on the Windows 7.
